Employee Relations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Employee Relations - Essay Example factory employers. He also used to pursue other workers in favor of his masters. That is why the other workers did not like him. He after some time lost his one finger in an accident during his work in the factory. After that the masters did not bother to help him. Then he decided to agree on with other workers in the protest against the factory owners. The union of the workers did not exactly wanted to get what the majority of the workers are trying hard to achieve during strike. He was eventually fired from his job due to his conflict with the masters as well as the union of the laborers. After some time when the conflict was sorted out in a decent manner, his job was again given to him. In this movement we see the roles of the workers are transformed during the strike. They were actually the cause of reduced supply of products to the market no matter what the products are in this case. This shortage of supply eventually leads to inflation in the market and the innocent people suff er. This is a negative role prescribed to workers in the market. In the example above, it is clear that the purpose of workers were not actually the same as that of the union of laborers. This evidence shows that the union memberââ¬â¢s purpose was somewhat different and hence some kind of political influence and affiliation seemed to be present working efficiently here. The purpose was not exactly the same in most of the cases in the world. For example, according to a study made by Shri Ram Centre for Industrial and Human Resources, the laborers in Punjab wanted to settle down their matters silently by directly talking to the responsible authorities (Prakash, 2006, 91-109). In this way, the conflict due to the strikes can avoided between employers and employees. But the conflict is caused by the union itself often for some personal or political influences. Moreover, strikes only leads to destruction due to the stubborn behavior of the both parties. The laborers lose their jobs as in the above example and eventually suffer. On the other hand the owners of the organization also suffer due to having no work due to the strikes of the workers. The management also does not act according to its responsibilities at the time of strike and due to this irresponsive behavior political elements can get benefit of this situation. If the products produced have a few competitors in the market, it may lead the market towards monopoly. So this political influence can be caused by the close competitor of the organization in which the workers are striking. The relationship between the employers and the workers can be better due to the strike but the exact inverse is also possible. If the conflict is handled in a decent and effective manner, this will be the cause of greater trust from both the sides because the demands from both sides were equally treated. On the other hand, this situation may be worse if the conflict is not handled responsibly. This can lead to a more intense strike from the workers. For example, in the above case the workers were fired due to the strike going on because of the unprofessional behavior of the people sitting in the factory administration. The same example can be taken from another strike in the Johnson steel strike of 1919 where the authorities called the police during the strike of workers. Police were arresting

Process Steam Boiler Conversion Project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Process Steam Boiler Conversion Project - Essay Example Failed projects have a colossal negative impact to any business, especially due to the time and resources spent. Ensuring that the project management process continues in a successful manner, tools are available to support and ensure that the aspects of project integration, time, cost, quality, as well as human resources are effectively covered. The project charter for instance is a very important document that is prepared to support a successful project management process (Schwalbe, 2009). This lays the framework for the project management process and remains a strong reference point during the progress of the project. Lack of a project charter reflects negatively on the project and can adversely affect its success. Scheduling under project time management can be demonstrated using scheduling chart tools such as Gantt chart and critical path method (CPM). During project activity documentation, the project manager can use illustrations and diagrams to ensure that communication is wel l effected among the members of a project team and with other stakeholders. Charts are used to ensure that information is accurately passed across to the target audience. Another common tool in use in scheduling is the project evaluation and review technique (PERT) which is an analysis tool that can also be used by the manager to schedule the projectââ¬â¢s activities. The most important key to successful and effective project management is through planning. A logically constructed and orderly plan is essential to direct any type of project and to help in preparing a report from conception through completion. The key to good planning is in its turn founded on clearly defined project objectives. For instance, project planning can begin with the identification of the client's needs, the development of a budget and work schedule that fit these needs, and the planning for resources, including staff and materials. The setting up of a clearly defined project proposal plan is therefore v ery useful from the beginning as it can help ensure that matters as a technically capable staff and an adequate budget are part of the process. The understanding of the assumptions is important given how the expectations for the final results of the project are based on the initial suppositions made. Furthermore, changing assumptions throughout the project can bring about lack of satisfaction about the final results among the senior management; a scenario that is rather frequent in the project management field. Therefore, and despite the fact that project length remains a critical factor in the eventual extent of satisfaction exhibited with regard to the final results, assumptions should be documented at project initiation and throughout using the project charter as a possible means. The project manager should from then on continue to challenge and revalidate the assumptions to ensure that the project is either redirected towards a different set of objectives or simply terminated fu lly in the event of changing assumptions. Among the assumptions that need to be considered are related to both enterprise environmental factors as well as organizational process assets. Assumptions related to the external environment, and which can affect any given project and should be therefore taken well into account, include for

Industrial Analysis For The Candy Store Marketing Essay
Industrial Analysis For The Candy Store Marketing Essay Our business plan is to design an on campus candy store which provides a wide range of candies to students and the staff at a cheaper rate. We hope to provide a new sweet experience to our customers to sweeten their most memorable days with our candies. To the students who like sweets our store will be a paradise of candies. And we will ensure the 100% customer satisfaction. Our mission statement. Our mission is to introduce a new era in the sweet industry by innovating new products, to give a totally different experience to our customers who step on to our store and to inject freshness in the sweet industry such as candies with different flavours, wide range of party packages, seasonal offers and many more. Market forecast Sales value of sweets were slightly in pace between 2005 and 2006 but sales has being increased because of gum and jellies. Sources suggests that the sugar confectionery market will increase by 9% at current prices over the 2007-12 period, rising to an estimated à £1.3 billion by 2012. C:UsersSubnet1Desktopid=273283name=figure6-1-1185370514.jpgmaxWidth=851maxHeight=450.jpg Sales of sugar confectionery in the UK have followed a modest upward trend over the review period. Some industry commentators estimate even flatter trends and a minor growth of 3-3.5% between 2005-2007. Health concerns as well affected for the sales growth because more concern about balance diets. The sugar confectionery market will increase by 9% at current prices over the 2007-12 periods, rising to an estimated à £1.3 billion by 2012. However, removing the effects of inflation reveals a much more growth equating to just 1% in real-terms. The market increasing at a similar rate to that seen over the 2002-07 period, growing 6% over the next five years. With volume growth behind value in current terms, this is indicative of a rise in spend per unit on sugar confectionery over the forecast period. SWOT analysis Following are the strengths and opportunities of our business which we possess to bring a better range of candies to satisfy the customers we will minimize our weaknesses and threats while finding solutions to overcome them. Strengths are, The logo which speaks to the customer and attract them. Especially youngsters will be keener on the logo. Main concern will be on more natural colours and flavours will help to attract more customers. Since consumers are focus on health, gum and jellies have taken more priority as they made up of natural fruit juices. Novelty products such as party bags, seasonal products and surprise gifts help to drag more customers as well customized range of party packages. Attractive price range so that everyone willing to buy. Strong management team to organize plans for future and for past. As well developing good skills, sales strategies to attract more customers and also to maintain good faith with the retailers. Weaknesses are, Higher innovation cost has to occur to invent new candies to attract the customers. Efficiency is less as incapable of paying higher salary to staff. Less exposure to the wider market to attract more customers. Opportunities can be, Young generation looking for more diverse product range. On campus is a good location as there are no specific candy shops which provide variety of candies. Event coverage with discounted packages. Even in higher economic crisiss people will are willing to buy candies. Threats can be, Competition with other supermarkets which are based on campus. Economic slowdown. Price wars. Trend for discounts. Higher labour cost. PEST control analysis Political: The government would have to collect taxes from the shop therefore the candy store would have to pay the normal tax rates. The business doesnt need to be privatised because the property that they are going to use is in Brunel University. They have to follow the health and safety regulation due to being in the packed food industry. The business would not have control on the spending of the public funds however since they would pay tax they would want to know where the government is using the tax that they pay. Economical: The store will be less likely to be affected with the interest and inflation rate because the products are not very expensive therefore there would be minimal effect on the sales of the shop. If the store keeps the service friendly, helpful and has policies to deal with situations like sales return these factors would help create consumer confidence. The rate of unemployment would affect the business due to the reason that the people would be less likely to spend their disposable income on things like candy therefore they should develop a strategy that would help them keep going at the time of recession. The labour cost would be how much money they would spend on recruitment and the recruitment process. Socio- culture: the trend, consumers taste and preferences, change in lifestyle would affect the store the occupation wouldnt matter because all age groups would have it. Mainly it is targeted to the students and staff of the university. Also including things like organic candy that would also be ethnic and healthy to would attract many consumers. Technological: there would be a balanced effect of this factor on the business. They need software that would help them to innovate thing for the business so that they can maintain their consumers however they may also use it to increase the number of consumers for the business. The business can discover something new or improve the way they serve the consumers. If they have any way of doing the accounts and also to keep track on the financial side of the business. Legal: the business would need to follow all the employment laws and company laws. The business would need to find out what are the regulations of the business their type they may do this by going to the food department of the location where they are going to start and find out what sort of licence is needed to start up the store the business would also need to get employees identification number, resale permit and a food handler permit. Environmental: the store will not be affected a lot with the climatic changes because you can have candy anytime. The business may make more profits around Halloween and Christmas however it may remain popular throughout the season. Water resources wouldnt affect the business because the business wouldnt need water to serve the consumers however they would need it to remain hygienic however they may also use anti-bacterial gels. Energy supply would affect the business because they would not be able to use the computers, they may use the fridge that keeps the stock of the candy at a certain temperature if the electricity is not there that might differ the taste of the candy. Porters five forces The threats of new entrants Usually there will be more threats to a candy store as it can be initiate with lesser amount capital, can start up as a home industry, no investors needed etc. But since our candy store located on campus there will be less threats of new entrants so the competition will be low. The buyer power The consumers will compare the prices of other candy stores with us, and choose which one they can get more benefit and which one is cheaper, which one is delicious, in this case, we maybe reduce the price then get less profit or enhance the quality of candy then more and more consumers like our candy. So it can be stated that buyer power is high since the students and willing to buy a candy as a snack after a lecture. The supplier power In production of candies the primary raw materials we need are the coco beans, milk, sugar etc. When finding manufacturers, there are many but it is more important to find one which has quality products at a reasonable price. Sometimes the manufacturers may use financial techniques such as hedging in order to reduce the price impact of price rises on their own margins. However since the fine grade of coco production shows small part of world supply, the bargaining power of suppliers will increase. Overall it can say that suppliers power is high as we are buying raw materials from suppliers and preparing our sweets. The threat of substitution Some substitutes for a candy shop could be traditional chocolates, snacks and other confectionary products which customers used to satisfy their sweet tooth. So its clear that the candy industry should face numerous types of other substitutes such as peanut butter, yoghurts, ice creams, cookies etc. Therefore there is a good variety of substitutes available for the consumers which make the threat of substitution high. The competitive rivalry The intensity among rivalry among competitors in a business can lead to price wars, advertising battles, new product lines and high quality customer service. On campus our main rivalry party will be the supermarkets and shops which sell candies but as we selling variety of candies such as jaw breakers. Gummies, candy cane etc the competition will be less. So as we based on campus the competitors threat will be less to our candy store. SWOT analysis for our competitors Strengths Firms brand name and resources. Experience of being in the industry for longer time. Highly skilled labour. Weaknesses Low product awareness. Lack of variety of candies. Poor facility location. Lack of innovations. Opportunities Easy access to market. Even in inflationary situations people will tend to buy the candies. Special seasoning offers. Threats Since it is easy to start up more competitors will be there. As customers are more health conscious it will affect the sales volume. Imposing new regulations by government towards the sweet industry. Market segmentation Geography Segmentation strategy will allow the company to determine whether the segment is large enough to sustain the product or if there is no viable market for the product. If the company decides that the strategy is a viable one, than the company can implement and design a marketing mix strategy to implement for each of their individual segments. The candy shop we are going to open will be on campus in which our target customers will be mainly the students and the staff. The first task important to our candy shop is to understand the relationship between consumers and products in order to understand the environment and those involved in the consumer process. Once we evaluates the environment then must investigate the segmentation bases. Our segment will be students and the staff to whom we will be bound to serve according to their preferences like what candies they like most, what flavours they need etc. Determining the segmentation of the marketing process identifies useful categories in specific segments in which to target. Soft confectionery: the sweet of choice NPD and advertising support have helped drive sales of soft confectionery, which exceeded à £700 million in 2011. This segment represents just under half of the total market, with steady growth expected to continue in the coming years. Consumer tastes appear to be shifting from traditional hard to soft confectionery as static sales of hard sweets have seen the segment lose market share despite a recent rise in NPD. Gum represents just under 20% of the total market, and although the segment posted growth in 2011, its share fell slightly due to the growth rate falling behind that of the overall market. Figure 30: UK retail value sales of sugar confectionery and gum, by type, 2009-11 2009 % 2010 % 2011 (est) % % change 2010-11 % change 2009-11 à £m à £m à £m Soft confectionery 681 44 690 44 704 45 +2.0 +3.4 Mint confectionery 215 14 219 14 220 14 +0.5 +2.3 Hard confectionery 181 12 182 12 183 11 +0.5 +1.1 Functional confectionery* 130 8 128 8 129 8 +0.8 -0.8 Other confectionery 40 2 42 3 42 3 +0.0 +5.0 pricing strategy for the candy store: Our business would be using a combination of pricing strategy. We believe that Psychological pricing would help the consumers set a boundary and realise that the one pence makes a difference in the way they think about the price. for example when the price is à £10 pounds the consumer may not buy it but if it is written as à £9.99 then they may be attracted to it. We would also concentrate on the consumer based pricing because this may boost the sales of our shop and if the consumers find that we have a reasonable prices for our product of better promotional strategy. We think that the more offers we keep on the candies the more consumers we will get. This sort of pricing strategy can also sometimes keep us in line with our consumer because we will always know what sort of pricing most attracts them and do they think that our price for the candy is reasonable. We will also be using popular pricing: is when the shop would know how much are the consumers willing to pay for the product and then we will put an offer for example two bags of candy normally would cost à £10 but we would sell two bags less than à £9.50. Organisational structure: Organizational structure refers to the way that an organization arranges people and jobs so that its work can be performed and its goals can be met. When a work group is very small and face-to-face communication is frequent, formal structure may be unnecessary, but in a larger organization decisions have to be made about the delegation of various tasks. Thus, procedures are established that assign responsibilities for various functions. It is these decisions that determine the organizational structure. Candy store organisational structure: Director of marketing in candy store A marketing director is a person responsible for the overall marketing operations of an organization or business. The job requires not only having skill in the creative aspect of advertising, but also having the budgetary knowledge needed to plan appropriately. Thus, the marketing director must be an effective manager in terms of both budget, and the creative process. Time at the job will often be split between these two primary functions. In our candy store, there are two people manage advertising and budget. Our advertising should always be aesthetically pleasing so student will think happy thoughts when they think of candy. And use the Internet and traditional advertising to market your candy store, including writing your own press releases to disseminate to your local newspapers. Another idea is to visit local condominiums and leave samples and literature in the clubhouse, or take samples along with business cards to office buildings and give them to receptionists to hand out And budget our money so we have the resources to do what we want , for example: more advertising to attract student; more kinds of candy; more activity. Director of sales in candy store An individual employed by a business to manage the activities of subordinate salespeople, and to develop and implement an effective selling strategy for the business in general. The sales director typically has full control over the sales function and staff within the budget allocated by a business and is often part of its higher management. The director of our candy shop should presents a summary of his visits to the director of sales and marketing on a weekly basis prior and after the week is completed and conduct monthly competitor market survey on their new candy, promotion and pricing tactics and to report to director of sales for proactive strategic planning. Director of operations in candy store The manager of our candy store, who is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations. We divide our candy store to two parts, one of them is shop A, including zone A-D, and another one is shop B, including zone E-G, in this case, the student in campus can buy candy easily. Opportunities and treats There are many opportunities for new businesses to enter the sweet confectionary market. It is predicted that the sale figures of this market has increased by 9.6 percent in the UK. This is the only business that is not threatened by the inflation, because consumers still buy confectionary sweet even when they are on a tight budget. The graph below supports the statement. sugar sales 2006 to 2016.JPG Marketing strategy The market strategy for the company is to sell products that are organic, with no artificial flavours and colours. The business will also have an ethical approach towards their consumers and employees. The market offers the business to be potentially successful due to the consistent increase in the sales on sugar confectionary. It has grown so much that all of the supermarket must have an aisle where they dont sell sweets. As long as we keep our prices reasonable consumers are likely to be loyal and they would defiantly repurchase again and again. The Nature of Logic and Perception Essay -- Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the use of those cognitive skills or strategies that increase the probability of a desirable outcome. It is used to describe thinking that is purposeful, reasoned and goal directed - the kind of thinking involved in solving problems, formulating inferences, calculating likelihoodââ¬â¢s, and making decisions when the thinker is using skills that are thoughtful and effective for the particular context and type of thinking task. Thus, critical thinking involves: following evidence where it leads; considering all possibilities; relying on reason rather than emotion; being precise; considering a variety of possible viewpoints and explanations; weighing the effects of motives and biases; being concerned more with finding the truth than with being right; not rejecting unpopular views out of hand; being aware of one's own prejudices and biases, and not allowing them to sway one's judgment. The purpose of critical thinking is, therefore, to achieve understanding, evaluate viewpoints, and solve problems. Since all three areas involve the asking of questions, we can say that critical thinking is the questioning or inquiry we engage in when we seek to understand, evaluate, or resolve. Critical thinking includes the ability to respond to material by distinguishing between facts and opinions or personal feelings, judgments and inferences, inductive and deductive arguments, and the objective and subjective. It also includes the ability to generate questions, constru...

Does Parole Work?
Does parole work? That is an important question as it relates to criminal justice and more specifically community corrections. How do we measure if parole is working? One way is to look at the recidivism rate of parolees. This policy paper will take an in depth look at this question. Also, this paper will study the current parole policy, my policy recommendations, and finally my conclusion of this problem. Parole is a very important tool for criminal justice in the United States of America. But does this tool work in reducing reoffending by released prisoners.Statement of the ProblemDoes parole work? One way to measure this by looking at recidivism rates by paroled prisoners who are released after serving their time. The proper question should be, does parole work in reducing recidivism rates? In the U.S. Justice System, parole is a thoughtfully used community correction option (Walker, 2015, p.288). One way to look at this is politically. The two sides are the right or Republicans and the left or Democrats. The right said that high-risk predators are let go into society and the left stated that release outcomes were based on less than scientific standards (Walker, 2015, p.288). The left's position was formed before sentencing guidelines were established (Walker, 2015, p.288). According to Samuel Walker, parole provided valuable tools to both inmates trying to get out and prison officials trying to get compliance from inmates. Parole was also a way to combat the ever-rising population in correction institutions (Walker, 2015, p.288). According to an Urban Institute study (2009) it queried, does parole work on reducing recidivism rates of released inmates? The answer after studying the statistics is it has little to no effect on re-offending or parole violations committed by former inmates (Walker, 2015, p.289). The Urban Institute study (2009) did not say the practice of releasing prisoners early or the idea of parole was a bad idea. However, they found there is no system of community corrections that performs better than another system (Walker, 2015, p.289). According to Christopher Zoukis (author and contributor for the Huffington Post), examining statistics of greater than 25,400 ex-prisoners released home-free or on community corrections during 2005 revealed 49.3% had been rearrested within eight years of release. The study included arrests for new crimes and for violating their conditions of parole. The ex-inmates that were released in 2005 included 31.7% that were convicted and 24.7% who were incarcerated again (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/christopher-zoukis/report-documents-us-recid_b_9542312.html). The re-arrest rates for released ex-inmates (52.5%) was greater than those released on probation (35.1%). According to the study, most released or paroled individuals committed new offenses within two years of their release at an average of 21 months (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/christopher-zoukis/report-documents-us-recid_b_9542312.html). Parole was meant to reintegrate prisoners back into society as productive members of society not as an opportunity to reoffend. This creates new victims and cost tax payers millions in the mechanizations of the criminal justice system (Zoukis, 2017).Current PolicyHere is the current United States Parole policy as follows: Federal prisoners serving a sentence of less than thirty years prior to November 1987 can apply for an initial parole hearing within 120 days of being incarcerated. This can happen through an application process for eligible prisoners (https://www.justice.gov/uspc/how-parole-works). According United States Department of Justice, D.C. Code offenders get a parole hearing sometime in the nine months before they become eligible for parole. The date is determined by the Bureau of Prisons. Inmates who get parole are given a date of release based on the parole release guidelines. These guidelines have been developed to make release decisions fair for all inmates giving credence to the system used (https://www.justice.gov/uspc/how-parole-works). Federal prisoners are entitled to interim hearings every eighteen to twenty-four months. The Parole Commission holds these hearings that are dependent upon the length of the prison term. During these hearings the Parole Commission must decide if there are enough positive or negative factors to legitimize changing the original release date (https://www.justice.gov/uspc/how-parole-works). D.C. A review is done before the release date of each inmate. This is done to assess the prisoner's record while incarcerated and they have met conditions of release (https://www.justice.gov/uspc/how-parole-works). Inmates are given a decision of their parole hearings by a Notice of Action. Federal inmates can appeal any parole decision if they feel that they have been treated unfairly by the Parole Commission. This appeal will trigger a subsequent review by the National Appeals Board (https://www.justice.gov/uspc/how-parole-works). According to the United States Department of Justice, prisoners of the federal system let out on parole or through mandatory release must report to their parole officer upon release. Paroled inmates must follow a set of rules set-up to aid in supervision and keep the public safe. D.C. offenders let go are supervised by the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (https://www.justice.gov/uspc/how-parole-works). If the parolee commits a new offense and/or violates the terms of their release, then the Parole Commission is contacted. The Parole Commission then puts out a warrant for the parolee's arrest and the parolee is picked up. Finally, a hearing is called to rule on the allegations and if the parolee is found in violation of their terms of parole, they may be returned to prison to serve out the rest of their prison sentence (https://www.justice.gov/uspc/how-parole-works). Why is the parole policy and procedures not alleviating the recidivism rates of offenders? The main problem is that parole makes certain assumptions or predictions when releasing offenders into community corrections. When it comes to parole, the United States Justice system has been trying to predict who will be successful on parole since the 1920's. Experts have tried out many formulas that attempt to predict what individuals will have success on parole. They hope these predicting formulas show who is ready to re-enter our society. These experts have had little success in predicting who is ready for release. The fact is that they are no closer today then they were in the 1920's (Walker, 2015, p.290). According to Samuel Walker, Martinson and McKenzie stated that only particular programs work for certain inmates. Matching these inmates to the program that works best for them is a shot in the dark. Even using risk prediction instruments, like in California, is no more efficient than other programs (Walker, 2015, p.290).Policy Recommendations/Action PlanMy policy recommendations are three-pronged. First, after the offender is released, the government should aid in employment. This would allow the offender to become a productive member of society and they would be able to earn a living. This would save the taxpayers millions by not having to pay for further incarceration. The next prong would be helping with housing for the first six months after release. Although this would cost the taxpayers, it would still be cheaper than housing them in prisons and the cost of all the procedures in the criminal justice system. Finally, therapy specific to an offender's needs would be beneficial for the offender and basically everyone in our society. This would help provide mental tools to aid in rehabilitation. The biggest hurdle to implementing my recommendations would be how do you pay for it? I believe this would also cause political problems. Providing funding for government programs usually does create political push back. I believe policy makers would be on board for employment and therapy. I do not believe they would support the housing.ConclusionDoes the United States parole policy work? When we release offenders on parole, is there a big difference in the recidivism rates versus that of offenders serving out their full term in prison? The answer is sadly no. The problem with all community corrections is that it creates a prediction problem. As we all know, predicting human behavior is at best fifty/fifty. I do believe the policy recommendations I made would help, but it is not one-hundred percent fool proof. It all comes down to free will and free choice.Works CitedUnited States Department of Justice. The Reconstruction Era and Its Effects on Slavery with and...
The Reconstruction Era and its effects on Slavery with and after President Lincoln The Reconstruction Era which followed the Civil War was a period marked by a severe effort to re-establish a depleted and distraught society. The war, which was aimed at confronting the national dilemma of slavery, only led to subsequent problems over emancipation and an undefined condition of freedom. Some, who had naively assumed that ending slavery would resolve the problem of racial inequality, overlooked the prejudice and unpleasant feeling towards blacks. Lincolnââ¬â¢s plan for reconstruction was aimed at reuniting southern states with the union and to strengthen the Republican Party in the South; which were his main supporters. One of the mainâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In his 2nd Inaugural address, Lincoln advocated that the Civil War was Godââ¬â¢s punishment of a nation having human beings kept in bondage (Abraham Lincoln ââ¬Å"Second Inaugural Address: March 4, 1865â⬠). Just for a slight moment was Lincolnââ¬â¢s goal realized before the acts of then President Johnson attempted to strip away Lincolnââ¬â¢s foundation for freedom. Before Lincoln was assassinated he managed to get the thirteenth amendment passed in House after it failed to do so in 1864. This was important for Lincoln with elections coming up and he knew that if this wasnââ¬â¢t passed his chances of reelection would be doubtful. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude and was the first grant of civil rights given to African Americans (ââ¬Å"Thirteenth Amendment: January 31, 1865â⬠). The 14th Amendment was passed into law and protects the rights against state infringements, defines citizenship, prohibits states from interfering with privileges and immunities, requires due process and equal protection, punishes states for denying vote, and disqualifies Confederate officials and debts (ââ¬Å"Fourteenth Amendment: June 16, 1866â⬠). Many People1663 Words à |à 7 PagesThe civil war was a grave cause of many events. Many people may see the results of the war as a chain reaction to many following eras. Julius Caesar Essay Honor - 980 Words
Madeline Switzer M. Halfmann Honors English 9 6 October 2017 Honor In William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, Julius Caesar, many themes are developed. One character, Brutus, displays a significant theme that develops through the entire play. The theme that is supported most by this character is the idea that honor and respect are gained through performing works for the good of others instead of for personal gain. This theme is first seen when Brutus thinks about whether he should kill Caesar. He sits in his orchard and contemplates what his reason for killing Caesar is. As he thinks this over, he realizes that if he kills Caesar, it is not for his own gain, but for others. He expresses this when he says, ââ¬Å"It must be by his death, and, for my part,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The citizens of Rome begin to see Brutusââ¬â¢s way of thinking and they understand that he really did think of the good of the people while making his decision. They also understand that Brutus was not thinking selfishly like they had assumed, but logically. This helps them to trust him more because he thought about the situation in an unbiased way. The plebeians respond to Brutusââ¬â¢s explanation by saying, ââ¬Å"Live, Brutus, live, live! / Bring him with triumph home unto his houseâ⬠¦ This Caesar was tyrant. / Nay, thatââ¬â¢s certain. / We are blessed that Rome is rid of himâ⬠(III.ii.49 -50 and 75-77). The Plebeians learn that Brutus had honest intentions and they respect and praise him for it. The knowledge that Brutus was selfless enough to kill his friend in order to save them from tyranny, earns their respect. A final situation where this theme is developed is during the events surrounding the death of Brutus. The honor that Brutus gains through performing deeds without thinking of his own gain is solidified at the end of the play around the event of Brutusââ¬â¢s death. At the beginning of act five, scene five, Brutus tells his servants that he believes his time living has come to an end, and he needs their help to kill him. One after another, Brutusââ¬â¢s servants tell him no. They respond to his request saying, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d rather kill myselfâ⬠¦ Thatââ¬â¢s not an office for a friend, my lordâ⬠Show MoreRelatedJulius Caesar- Honor of Brutus Essay776 Words à |à 4 PagesThe Honor of an Important Roman Man In Roman history, some elite men held certain values that they felt strong enough to take their life in order to defend it.
